Cloud cost optimization with Capacity Planner

Capacity Planner is ITRS’s observability solution for server infrastructure capacity and cloud costs. Within one unified platform, customers can gain insights into the capacity and utilization of their physical or private cloud server estates.

Through unique and powerful data visualisations and reporting, they can estimate costs of migrating those servers to the public cloud, along with recommendations based on historical utilisation.

Once in the public cloud, they can manage and optimize costs through our Cloud Cost Optimization module. This helps customers reduce their cloud spend by identifying waste (e.g., idle servers), by recommending cheaper alternative servers. This is based on configurable rightsizing rules, or by recommending optimal savings plans or reservation purchases.

Release 113
Our latest R113 product release in October 2022 introduced enhancements in the user interface, reporting capability and performance, including:

  • New user interface framework

The new Capacity Planner UI framework is based on React and amCharts. It brings a fresh look to Capacity Planner, and consistency with ITRS's new Observability Platform, Obcerv.

Standard lists are now used throughout, with a choice of the number of rows to display, pagination, and sorting options, as well as easier access to Baseline Views, Scenarios and Reports. We have also removed libraries that are reaching the end of support as part of our continuous improvement on security.

  • Reporting enhancements

This release comes with a new report framework with improved presentation of saved reports and report templates. The report page now distinguishes more clearly between Reports which can be run immediately to produce output, and Report Templates which require parameters to be set before they can be run. Brief descriptions of each report are now available along with a direct link to the documentation pages for more information.

Capacity Planner solutions now include a set of standard, pre-packed reports. These are indicated by the standard report set as the owner and provide a quick way for new clients to get started using reports, and to access key information more easily. Users who are granted appropriate permissions can create new standard reports that become available to all users within their own solutions.

Several other enhancements have been included to make reports easier to use and improve consistency.  When choosing baseline views in reports, any filter groupings that are used in that view are now displayed. There is standardization of parameters across reports, and improvements to the way in which filters and groupings are applied. For example, when reporting on storage drive utilization, it is now possible to directly select and filter on groupings associated with the server on which the drive is located.

  • Cloud Cost Optimization performance enhancements

Cloud right-sizing is now quicker. We are now also updating cloud cost reference data more frequently, which ensures that recommendations will always be using the most recently available pricing and instance type data.
